For eleven days a working stretch of downtown stops being a street. The Feast of San Gennaro is the oldest and largest of New York's Italian-American street feasts, and the thing to understand before going is that it is a religious procession with a fair around it, not a fair with a saint's name on it.

The Grand Procession
Saturday, September 26, 2pm to 4pm: the statue is carried through the streets, with live music. The Solemn High Mass is on September 19.
What the San Gennaro feast costs
Nothing to walk in. The daily opening and closing times are not published on the feast's own site, so no hours appear here.
Two weekends and nine weekdays, and they are not the same event. The weekend nights on Mulberry are shoulder-to-shoulder, which is the picture everyone has of the feast and also the reason people leave after twenty minutes; a Tuesday evening is the same food and the same stalls with room to stand still. If the point of going is the procession, that is Saturday the 26th and it is the one date that cannot be moved. And the side streets matter: Hester and Grand carry the same feast with a fraction of the crowd, and the queues on Mulberry are for the stands nearest the entrance, not for the best of them.
