What the Rose Parade is
The Tournament of Roses has produced what it calls America's New Year Celebration since 1890 — the parade and the Rose Bowl Game on the same day, in the same city.
A New Year's Day parade means a New Year's Eve on the route, which is the part nobody plans for: the kerbside is claimed the night before, and Pasadena's own rules govern when you may put a chair down. Anyone flying in for it is really booking two nights, not one.
