For one month a year the city hands Halloween its streets back. Trick-or-Streets closes Open Streets and plazas to cars for harvest and Halloween celebrations run by block associations, business districts, schools and community groups — 160 of them in 2026, the most in the programme's five years.

When and where

Throughout October 2026, in all five boroughs. The city's list runs from the first Saturday of the month to Halloween itself, and more than half of the events on it fall on Saturday 31 October, when the street is where the trick-or-treating is. Every event has its own block, date and hours on NYC DOT's page.

What it costs

Nothing. The events are free, and NYC DOT says it is handing out 75,000 pieces of candy along the way.

What happens on the street

Each organiser runs its own: trick-or-treating, face painting, games, live music and costume contests. New this year, the Municipal Art Society of New York is leading free walking tours of the history and architecture of participating neighbourhoods — details still to be announced — and Street Lab is bringing Halloween play to events outside public schools in four boroughs.

Events can be delayed or cancelled in bad weather, so check the city's list on the day.

Programme

Thursday 22 October, 2–6pm — Hillel Plaza, Brooklyn
Signature event at Flatbush Junction, with the Flatbush Nostrand Junction BID.
Saturday 24 October, noon–5pm — Water Street, Staten Island
Signature event on Water Street from Canal Street to Beach Street, with the Van Duzer Civic Association.
Sunday 25 October, 2–7pm — Austin Street, Queens
Signature event in Forest Hills, Austin Street from 71st Avenue to 71st Road, with Neighbors for A Safer Austin Street.
Wednesday 28 October, 3–7pm — Canal Street, Manhattan
Signature event on Canal Street from Orchard Street to Essex Street, with the Canal Street Merchants Association.
Saturday 31 October, 10am–3pm — James Baldwin Plaza, the Bronx
Signature event on Goulden Avenue at Mosholu Parkway, with the James Baldwin Outdoor Learning Center.

The useful thing about Trick-or-Streets is not the number 160 but the list behind it: it is the closest New York has to a register of where trick-or-treating will happen on the 31st, block by block, with hours. Most of the Halloween-day streets open at midday or in the afternoon and wind down by eight or nine, so a family evening is best planned backwards from the parade it ends at — the brownstone blocks of Park Slope and the Village both have closed streets within a short walk of their parade routes. The weekday signature events, Hillel Plaza on the 22nd and Canal Street on the 28th, start at two and three: they are after-school events, not evening ones.
