The Whitney launched artport, its online gallery for commissioned net art, in 2001. For the 25th anniversary the museum brings a quarter century of it into the building: more than 100 works commissioned for the site, shown on the sixth floor and online, opening November 21, 2026.

How it is laid out

Three strands, matching how artport commissioned: the Gate Pages of 2001–2006, portals to artists' own sites; the main Commissions, running since 2001; and Sunrise/Sunset, the series that ran from 2009 to 2024, with its successor On the Hour. The open floor is designed to feel like floating browser windows. The works range across code, data visualisation, nonlinear narrative, worldbuilding, gaming environments and AI-driven net art, on privacy, identity, surveillance and the line between online and offline life.

The performance

The exhibition includes the world premiere of Human Unreadable Act III by the duo Operator, the last part of a generative choreography work unfolding since 2023, in the Susan and John Hess Family Theater on November 19, 21 and 22; the November 19 performance is 7 to 8:30pm. Members preview the show on November 18, 12 to 6pm.

Who made it

Organised by Christiane Paul, Curator of Digital Art, with David Lisbon and Colin Brooks. The closing date has not been announced.

Net art is the one medium museums have never worked out how to hang, and the Whitney has been the exception since 2001 because it commissioned the work instead of collecting it afterwards. This is the first time the whole archive is in a room. Go for the Gate Pages — the 2001–2006 portals are the web as it looked before platforms, and most of them no longer run anywhere else.
