The Central Park Pumpkin Flotilla is cancelled for 2026

For more than thirty years the north end of Central Park has seen October out with a line of lit jack-o'-lanterns crossing the Harlem Meer at dusk behind a kayak. This year it will not.

What was announced

The Central Park Conservancy, which has presented the Flotilla since the early 1990s, has called off the 2026 edition. Its reason, as Time Out New York reported on 17 September, is that the event became too popular for its existing setup to safely handle the thousands of people who wanted to attend. There is no replacement celebration in 2026.

The Conservancy's own Flotilla page now leads to its general calendar, and the form New Yorkers used to put a pumpkin forward is gone.

What the Flotilla was

It began at the Pool and moved to the Harlem Meer in 1993, to mark the opening of the Charles A. Dana Discovery Center. It used to be called the Pumpkin Sail; the Conservancy dropped the name because, as it puts it, there have never been pumpkins for sale at the event. People brought their own carved pumpkins — first come, first served in recent years — and the Conservancy fitted them with waterproof LED lights and sent them across the water in two long connected lines behind a kayak paddled by a pirate or a witch. Around it were storytelling, magic, music, crafts, carving demonstrations and a costume parade by the Dana Center, all of it free.

What comes next

According to Time Out New York, the Conservancy is spending the year exploring a new Halloween event for the north end of the park — one that can welcome larger crowds and give the community more ways to take part. Nothing has been named or dated.

Where the pumpkins are this year

The carved-pumpkin Halloween that is on is the Great Jack O'Lantern Blaze up the Hudson, seven thousand of them, carved by somebody else, until 8 November. For a costume, the Village Halloween Parade takes anyone who turns up in one on Sixth Avenue on the 31st. For small children, Boo at the Zoo fills the Bronx Zoo every weekend to 1 November, and Sleepy Hollow puts on Twilight Village every Friday to Sunday in October.

Cancelling a free event for being too popular sounds odd until you picture what this one asked of the ground: everyone wants the same stretch of shoreline in the same quarter of an hour of dusk, and a crowd that size cannot be spread across an afternoon. What is worth noticing is the wording of what comes next — larger crowds, more ways to take part — which describes a bigger Halloween at the north end, not a smaller one. Any listing still showing a Flotilla date for this October is out of date.
