SXSW badges go up on September 17, six months before the festival

The deadline is the news, because the number attached to it is larger than most people expect: SXSW puts the saving between its early-bird pricing and the walk-up rate at up to $900, and the early-bird window closes on September 17 — six months and a week before the festival opens.
What the badges cost now
Music, $550. Film & TV, $775. Innovation, $895. Platinum, $1,395, which covers all four festivals. Group rates exist.
What you are buying six months early
SXSW 2027 runs March 15 to 21 in Austin and is four events at once — the Innovation Conference, the Film & TV Festival, the Music Festival and the Comedy Festival — across thirteen content tracks. The line-up for none of them is published yet. That is the actual trade: the badge is cheapest at the point when the least is known about what it gets you.
The part that is not on the badge page
March is the week Austin is full, and rooms are priced for it. A saving made on 17 September is a saving that can be given back twice over by booking a bed in January.
Buying a badge before a line-up exists is only a good deal if you would go regardless of who is announced, and for most people that is true of exactly one of the four festivals — whichever one is their own trade. That is the honest read of the tiers: the single-festival badges are priced for people who already know why they are going, and Platinum is priced for people who do not, which is the wrong reason to spend $845 more. If the decision is genuinely open on 17 September, the cheaper mistake is the Music or Film badge, not the one that keeps every door open.
